๐จ THIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY
Seek immediate veterinary attention. Do not wait or attempt home treatment. Every minute counts.
Wet Tail (Proliferative Ileitis) in Hamsters
The most serious intestinal disease of hamsters, caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. Characterized by severe, watery diarrhea. Extremely contagious and often fatal within 24-48 hours without treatment.

Severity

When to Act
๐จ Immediate Emergency Care
Symptoms & Signs
Watery diarrhea
Profuse, watery stool that soaks the area around the tail โ hence "wet tail."
Dehydration
Sunken eyes, skin tenting, weakness from rapid fluid loss.
Lethargy and hunched posture
Hamster sits hunched, eyes half-closed, barely moving.
Ruffled fur
Coat appears dull, greasy, and unkempt.
Irritability
Hamster may squeak or bite when handled due to abdominal pain.
Behavioral Changes to Watch For
Pets can't tell us what's wrong. These behavioral changes are often the first clues that something is wrong.
๐พ Complete inactivity
Hamster stops running in their wheel, burrowing, and exploring.
What You May Notice:
Your normally active hamster stays in one corner of the cage, unmoving.
Causes & Risk Factors
Causes
- โขInfection with Lawsonia intracellularis (primary agent)
- โขOften co-infection with other bacteria (E. coli, Campylobacter)
- โขStress triggers outbreaks: weaning, transport, overcrowding, dirty environment
Risk Factors
- โ Young hamsters (3-8 weeks โ recently weaned)
- โ Syrian (golden) hamsters most susceptible; dwarf hamsters relatively resistant
- โ Stress from recent purchase/pet store environment
- โ Poor husbandry and sanitation
- โ Overcrowded cage
- โ Sudden diet change
How It's Diagnosed
- 1Clinical signs and age (recently purchased young Syrian hamster) = high suspicion
- 2Fecal examination for Lawsonia (PCR or special stains)
- 3Necropsy (often the diagnosis is confirmed post-mortem in fatal cases)
Treatment Options
Antibiotics and Fluid Therapy
Immediate treatment is critical โ delay can be fatal.
Steps
- 1.Enrofloxacin (Baytril) โ first-line antibiotic
- 2.Doxycycline as alternative
- 3.Subcutaneous fluids for dehydration
- 4.Syringe feeding with Critical Care or recovery formula
- 5.Keep warm (75-80ยฐF / 24-27ยฐC)
- 6.Probiotics to restore gut flora
Expected Outcome
Survival possible with treatment started within hours of first signs.
Precautions
- !NEVER give penicillin-based antibiotics to hamsters โ fatal enterotoxemia
- !Isolate the affected hamster from all other hamsters immediately
Strict Hygiene and Isolation
Prevents spread to other hamsters.
Steps
- 1.Isolate the sick hamster in a separate cage
- 2.Disinfect the original cage and all accessories
- 3.Wash hands thoroughly after handling the sick hamster
- 4.Dispose of bedding and droppings carefully
Expected Outcome
Prevention of transmission to other hamsters.
Precautions
- !The bacteria can survive on surfaces โ thorough disinfection is essential
Common Medications Used
| Medication | Usage | Important Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enrofloxacin (Baytril) | First-line antibiotic for wet tail | Broad-spectrum, effective against Lawsonia. Oral suspension given by mouth. |
Prevention
- โQuarantine new hamsters for 2 weeks before introducing to existing pets
- โMinimize stress โ consistent routine, quiet environment
- โClean, dry bedding changed weekly
- โAvoid sudden diet changes
- โChoose hamsters from reputable breeders vs pet stores when possible
When to See a Veterinarian
- ๐จAny diarrhea in a hamster โ treat as an emergency
- ๐จWet, soiled area around the tail
- ๐จLethargic, hunched hamster not moving
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use over-the-counter wet tail treatments?
Prognosis
Guarded. Mortality is 50-90% even with treatment. Survival is higher when treatment begins at the very first sign of diarrhea. Hamsters that survive the first 48 hours of treatment have a better chance.

A highly contagious and life-threatening viral disease in dogs, especially puppies. Causes severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Immediate veterinary care is critical.
severeCanine Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas causing severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and potentially life-threatening systemic complications. Can be acute (sudden) or chronic.
severeFeline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)
A once-fatal viral disease caused by a mutated feline coronavirus. Historically a death sentence, but now treatable with antiviral therapy (GS-441524/Remdesivir). Early detection is critical.
severeFeline Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)
A highly contagious and often fatal viral disease โ the feline equivalent of canine parvovirus. Causes severe destruction of white blood cells and intestinal lining. Vaccination is highly protective.
