Choosing a dog breed is exciting but carries responsibility. Different breeds are predisposed to different health problems. Knowing what to watch for can help you catch issues early and provide better care.

Large and Giant Breeds

Labrador Retriever: Hip and elbow dysplasia, CCL tears, obesity, exercise-induced collapse. Golden Retriever: Hip dysplasia, cancer (especially hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma), hypothyroidism. German Shepherd: Hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, bloat (GDV), perianal fistulas. Great Dane: Bloat (GDV) โ€” the #1 cause of death, dilated cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia, cervical vertebral instability. Rottweiler: Hip dysplasia, osteosarcoma (bone cancer), bloat, aortic stenosis.

Small and Toy Breeds

Yorkshire Terrier: Patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, dental disease, portosystemic shunt. Chihuahua: Patellar luxation, dental disease, hydrocephalus, collapsing trachea. Dachshund: Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) โ€” the #1 concern, obesity worsens this dramatically. Pomeranian: Tracheal collapse, patellar luxation, dental disease, alopecia X. Pug: Brachycephalic airway syndrome, eye problems (corneal ulcers, proptosis), skin fold infections, obesity.

Brachycephalic Breeds (Flat-Faced)

Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers: These breeds need special attention for breathing difficulties, overheating risk, eye problems, skin fold dermatitis, and anesthesia risk (higher than other breeds).

Herding Breeds

Border Collie and Australian Shepherd: MDR1 gene mutation (sensitivity to certain drugs including ivermectin at high doses), epilepsy, Collie Eye Anomaly, and hip dysplasia. Always test for MDR1 before giving medications.

What to Do Before Choosing a Breed

Research breed-specific health issues thoroughly. Choose a reputable breeder who performs health testing (OFA, PennHIP, genetic tests). Ask to see health certificates for both parents. Consider adopting an adult mixed-breed dog โ€” hybrid vigor often means fewer genetic health problems. Get pet insurance early, before any pre-existing conditions develop.
